To quickly access health information from your website's browser, download Great Danes with GDV “RIP General, We love you” General was our 4 1/2 year only great dane. He was the healthiest, happiest, and most loyal animal that we have ever owned. On July 26th, 2008 General started acting very much not like himself. He would always explore into the woods behind our home but this time he didnt come back. We searched and called for him when finally about an hour later he came home… He was very skidish and stand offish. I became concerned so I check him all over for any bites. I found nothing. With a peace of mind we went inside to call it a night. The next morning we walked outside to find him lying in the same spot that we left him. He was breathing rapidly and began trying to vomit but nothing came out. He would drink water but he could not keep it down. We thought that he may have just eated something death in the woods. He had slight bloating but it wasnt enough to concern us. Hours went by and he seemed as if he was coming around. He began wagging his tail and trying to be himself. Suddenly out of left field his abdomen began boating twice the normal size. He collapsed and struggled to breath. I immediately called the vet but it was too late. He could not be saved. My husband and I sat down with him. I held his head as he always loved for Mommy to hold him. Not more than 5 minutes after I held him, he passed. I rubbed his face and kissed him goodbye as he took him last breaths. This was the most difficult thing that I have ever experienced. I would not wish this on my worst enemy. Warning to those with bigger dogs, call your vet! There is a preventive surgery that can be done for GDV. July 2008
