Always test… and RE-TEST

by: Scott & Karla on Fri, Mar 14 2008

We have been fostering a stray that came to our outdoor feral shelter since mid-January, during the bitter below 0 temps. She was sweet and gentle, definitely not used to being outside and already had frostbite on the tip of her ear, which she eventually lost. So we took her in and made a safe sanctuary for her in our garage, where she has heat, 2 heated beds, other beds as well, toys, humidifier for static and all the love and attention we can give her. We have 6 other cats and learned early on to keep strays isolated until checked over. The next day took her to our vet’s, she was running a 105 fever and tested positive for FeLV After one type of antibiotic and still a fever, we tried another antibiotic. She was doing good, getting a poochy belly from eating well and silky coat. A little talker and sweetheart. Then she went into heat and being FeLV+, we were glad to see she wasn’t carrying babies. We took her to the vet today to be spayed and re-tested and this test came back NEGATIVE! They said there is a 70% chance a FeLV+ cat CAN build up an immunity and become negative. So, do not lose hope if the first test is positive. There is always a chance their little body can fight it first. We’re still to watch her and test her again in another 6 weeks, and hope she’s soon to become #7 of our feline family. ^..^
