Salem adopted us when her mother gave birth under our porch. She was small but had the heart of a lion. Her siblings died at birth but she was a survivor. I wish I knew back then, 12 years ago to have her checked for feline leukemia

Salem never weighed more than 7 lbs and was always fighting congestion, fevers and colds. She had one kitten but it was dead at birth. I always brought her to the vets when she wasn’t feeling well but I never thought of leukemia and the vets never thought mentioned it to me. Last week Salem was ill, her eyes were filled with fluids, she was congested and very lifeless, I took her to the vet and once again received medications, she was given fluids and she had blood work done for numerous things, they said her thyroid was swollen and she weighed 5.5lbs.

I brought her home and pampered her, and gave her medications as were instructed. the vet called 2 days later, Salem was positive for Feline leukemia. She seemed to be perking up somewhat, she couldn’t smell very well so i fed her tuna. This morning she couldn’t walk very well, it was almost as if she had to drag her hind quarters. tonight at 6:03 Salem was put to rest, the vet explained that she had very little muscle left in her body and her hind quarters were being paralyzed. I miss her, tomorrow she will lay to rest not far from where she lived and loved her life.

If i were to adopt another kitten I would be more assertive with my vet to have this test done on a yearly or bi yearly basis. Salem is gone but never forgotten and I hope that the cat owners I know ,will see the pain I feel and have their cats tested so they won’t have to make the decision that I had to make tonight.

  • Cat Leukemia - by Alison - (Tue, Oct 23 2007)
My 2 cats have leukemia, and one is 2 years old and the other one is 4 months old. And one 3 month old that has no signs of leukemia. The father died from this october 21st 2007, and was only showing signs of it 4 days before he died. The 4 months old kitty I have, is doing a lot better: he is drinking and eating. [more..]

At 5 months Daisy was diagnosed. We followed the rules, but by 7 months she developed a high fever and was hospitalized for a night. She had gingivitis and mouth sores. She takes interferon and antibiotics (for now). [more..]
  • Neutering your cat with Feline Leukemia - by Darla - (Thu, Oct 18 2007)
I had my 1 year old cat with Feline Leukemia neutered four weeks ago. I think I may lose her today. I was not aware that a cat with a weakened immune system should not undergo surgery…I thought I was doing a good deed should my cat get outdoors and possibly infect another cat. [more..]
