Treatments can prolong life

I have a cat named, Bella, short for Mary Shelly. or sometimes we call her Smelley Belly. In 2004, she started to act strange, she wasn’t eating and she didn’t seem to feel well. She also did something abnormal for her, she sought me out and clung to me. So when we wouldn’t eat, I took her to the Vet. They did a blood work up. And determined she had Feline Leukemia She was pretty bad. They started treating her with Interferon and Epotein. She still was pretty bad. The Vet said that if she didn’t start turning around over the weekend, I should think about putting her down. Now that was so upsetting. I had lost my only male Cat, Larry earlier in the year and facing the loss of Bella seemed too overwhelming for me. In 2004 Bella was 12, she is now 15 and we’ve only had one other infection since, though I do need to take her to the Vet because she does seem a bit off. I’m not sure if its the Heat or just old age creeping up on her. But I’m grateful for finding a Vet who treated her with Interferon and Epotein and for this extra time with her. As for my other Cats, I never tested them. And thats because I read about the percentages and the risk seem very low. And so far, knock on wood I haven’t encountered that problem. For those of you facing this, there is treatment and it isn’t that expensive and it does improve the quality of there lives. I’ve never regretted the extra time we’ve had.

- The News on 9-12-07 - by Michelle - (Sat, Sep 15 2007)
I work at a grooming shop and we have a mobile vet that comes in and does checks on our shop cats. We’ve had a kitten for a while now and decided that he was going to be permanent so we called the vet in to neuter and front paw declaw the cat.

- do your research - by Tracy - (Fri, Sep 14 2007)
I just found out that the little stray 3 month old kitten that I have been feeding; and finally decided to give a home to; is “weakly” positive for feline leukemia. I have been lucky enough to find some very helpful ladies who are very involved in cat welfare; providing foster care and helping with adoptions, etc.

- My vet was very wrong… - by Cheryl - (Fri, Sep 07 2007)
My vet told me 3 years ago my 5 month old “Pumkin” was positive for FeLV and that she might last two months. I was so devastated. She had swollen lymph nodes [throat] and he gave her medication which did make the swelling go down. I was scared to death for months just waiting for hell to come.
