Weezer had FIP

I adopted a sweet orange tabby from a pet store. I brought him home. In early February I decided it was time for him to get neutered. The day before the neuter he was lethargic and seemed depressed.

My boyfriend and I joked that Weezer knew what was coming! After the neuter he seemed back to normal, for the most part. He wanted to play and eat, kind of. Then he started peeing on the floor, in the bed, on pillows. The “pee” was not a normal color. I took him to the vet. The vet said that Weezer’s belly was swollen with fluids. He told me that I would have to euthanize him. I started to cry.

I brought Weezer home, I just wanted one more day with him. My vet injected him with fluids and a three day pain pack. I did not go to work that next day. I woke up early and loved and kissed my Weezer. Later that day his condition worsened and I knew it was time. Now, I am scared to death that FIP is showing ugly signs in my roommate’s cat, Beaner. He is about four years old and has a gunky eye. He is being lethargic and not eating as much as he used to (which he is a fat-boy, so he used to eat a lot.)

I am hoping and praying that Beaner doesn’t have FIP, I don’t think my roommate will ever forgive me for bringing Weezer into the house. Unfortunately, with all of my cat experience, I never even knew or have heard of FIP! By the time I found out Weezer had it, I suppose it was too late to quarantine him from Beaner anyway. If anyone would like to reassure me that Beaner doesn’t have FIP, I would love you forever.

  • Larry - by BK - (Fri, Mar 28 2008)
My little Larry wasn’t eating as much as he usually does about 3 weeks ago, so after about a week we went to the vet to see what was going on. They found that he had a fever, high white blood cell count, spots on his lungs, and was dehydrated, and put him on an IV and some antibiotics. [more..]
  • Sweet Savannah… - by J.D. - (Tue, Mar 25 2008)
My husband and I brought home Savannah (a Ragdoll) when she was 3 months old. While at the cattery, we noticed that several kittens appeared to be getting over a cold virus, which is what the breeder told us. [more..]
  • Brie - by Cheryl T - (Mon, Mar 24 2008)
We noticed that Brie (7 months old) had not been his normal kitty self for a few weeks back in mid Feb. He used to be such a little terror. Gradually it appeared that he was losing interest in playing, he looked depressed, and was always wanting to sleep. [more..]
