To quickly access health information from your website's browser, download Helping Dotie and Her “Kids” Hi Dodie: If Feline Herpes Virus is involved with your kitties, take heart it can be controlled. They will always have the disease but symptoms can be cotrolled. During periods of flare-ups the cats should be given 1000 mg of Lysine. The Lysine stops viral replication. During non-flare-ups they should get 500 mg/day per cat. it is quite common for FHV cats to get secondary bacterial infections in which case you will need antibiotics (arythomycin is used by many owners with FHV kitties). In addition to Lysien ask your vet for an immune booster called Interferon. This helps the kitties fight the viral infection. They should be given interferon daily witrh Lysine. If nasal discharge and congestion are a big problem then use a cool mist humidifer. This helps break up mucous in the upper respiratory tract. Keep stress levels down, join a HPV feline support group. There are many people out there who have been dealing with this for years and can give good advice. Good Luck with your kitties December 2007
