Praying for answers

First Fuzzy had “runny” eyes - for a long time. We used an ointment prescribed by his vet. This went on for a year or so. Then the sneezing started. A lot of sneezing and a terrible “wheezing” sound from time to time. OK, back to the vet.

He was not sure what was going on and gave Fuzzy a steroid injection in case it was allergies. Fuzzy was better for about 6 days and then it was back to the same old same old. The vet suggested taking Fuzzy to an allergist or putting him on steroids long term. I have taken steroids long term for an illness and those things are terrible. Not only do you gain weight, but they do many other horrible things to your body, and I didn’t want to do the same thing to my beloved “old man” (Fuzzy is 12).

We decided to rip up all the carpet in the house and put down hardwood floors to see if that would help our boy. We stopped using fabric softener, and we stopped smoking. None of this helped. Next, Fuzzy’s oldest sister, Priscilla started sneezing a couple weeks later Miss Molie started sneezing. Now Fuzzy never acted “sick”, he just sneezed. Priscilla didn’t act sick either. Miss Molie on the other hand is staying in bed most of the day, she isn’t eating or drinking much at all. I put the cats back on canned cat food just to get her to eat (it worked).

I called the vet and this time spoke with a different vet who suggested I put the cats on L-Lysine 500 mg per cat, per day. Crush the tablet and add it to the food. She said that’s what is used at animal shelters. She didn’t tell me what they used it for other than “an illness that is no usually vaccinated against when the cats have their normal shots. I spoke to her on Tuesday (Dec. 4th) and on Wednesday Simon the youngest started sneezing. Four down, one to go… so we are praying that the L-Lysine will work. I will call the vet tomorrow to tell her another cat is ill and it is time (way past time) for some serious answers.

I am terrified that we will loose Miss Molie if we don’t get this solved. I need to know how long does it take for the L-Lysine to begin working? If anyone has any comments, questions or anwers I would love to hear from you. If not, thanks for listening. I needed to tell someone my fears. I love these kitties, they are my hairy little kids.

  • My cats head is making cracking noises - by Lauren - (Wed, Dec 12 2007)
My cat is 13 years old and in the last year after a very stressful visit from the vet (traveling vet) in her van…my cat developed a severe head cold. We took him to another specialty vet who said his lung and chest were clear and there is nothing you can do about it because it’s viral (maybe that herpes virus). [more..]

Hi Dodie: If Feline Herpes Virus is involved with your kitties, take heart it can be controlled. They will always have the disease but symptoms can be cotrolled. During periods of flare-ups the cats should be given [more..]
