golden retriever has torn cruciate ligament

We purchased our dog from a backyard breeder. Never again!! My 9 month old golden retriever was running in our house, stopped suddenly and sat next to me without moving. She would put some weight on her leg after that but then stopped using the leg altogether.

I took her to the vet later that day she was x-rayed, then to a specialist a week later. I was told she had torn her cruciate ligament and would need surgery. Price $3000-$4300 depending on which proceedure. Fabellotibial Suture $3000 or TPLO $4300. I am told that normally if it happens on one leg it inevitably happens on the other. We are devistated! We cannot afford $8000 for surgeries on our dog! I have called a university vet hospital, the prices are about $700 cheaper but its hard to get an appt and will be at least 1 month for surgery if we do get one. I will definitley get insurance for my dog at this point if possible and for any future animals we may get!

  • My dog has osteoarthritis and a torn cruciate ligament - by Richard B. - (Thu, Jun 14 2007)
A year and a half ago, my wife and I noticed our 7-and-a-half-year old lab/dalmation mix limping on his left, hind leg. There was no noticeable cause but it didn’t go away with time. He sometimes lifted his left leg when he walked to keep the pressure off it and he could no longer sit, because it hurt him to put weight on his leg that way. At times he whimpered in pain. [more..]
