To quickly access health information from your website's browser, download Does this sound like distemper? My 15 year old son and I decided to adopt a dog from the animal shelter. We had recently moved to a large city and he was quite lonely. We found the cutest dachshund/lab mix online and decided to take a look. When we got there, he was coughing, lethargic, and had diarrhea. I tried to talk my son out of getting him but he wanted to try and save him as the shelter was going to put the dog down that afternoon. They told us he just had kennel cough. He (Snoopy) walked around and tried to jump on my son and he just seemed so sweet. We brought him home and, although he was drinking, he refused food. By nightfall, I figured he would be dead by morning. However, in the morning he seemed to have a little spunk left in him. He also had a more severe cough and bloody mucous discharge from his nose. The vet confirmed that he had pneumonia, a coccidia infection, and some other kind of bacterial overgrowth (normal flora that had gotten out of control). She also did lots of blood work and sent off some kind of panel to test for distemper (still waiting on those results…it takes about a week). It has been 5 days since then and he is on Clavamox, Metronidazole, and Albon. The diarrhea stopped the very next day and he began to eat. The cough is almost gone and today he was up running and chasing squirrels. Does it sound like he could possibly have or had distemper? It was something I thought about but didn’t think he would get better so quickly. Any comments would be appreciated. We love him to pieces and just keep praying he’ll be around for a long time.
