Lab Puppy - Distemper / Parvo ?
by: Sachin on Tue, Jun 24 2008
Facebook Twitter

I got a 5 week old lab puppy home on the 10th of June 2008. I picked him up from the litter because he was the most active, running around and eating normally.
He was really active at home as well and eating properly but his stool was bit loose.
I took him to the vet and he said could be worms, so he gave him deworming med.
Two days later the loose motions did not stop ,the vet gave him a shot to control it.

The shot stopped the loose motions, my puppy was super active and eating normally.
On the 18th of June as recommended by the vet, i took him for his first shot. The vet gave him a ‘Carona Virus Shot’.
19th morning loose motions start again and
i notice nasal discharge, i call the vet and he recommends a syrup for the cold. But nothing helped on 20th morning i noticed blood in my puppy’s stool, he had lost his appetite and was totally lethargic.
A friend told me try a different vet to get a second opinion, i took him to the other vet and he said two things:

1. The first shot a puppy should get is the distemper/ parvo virus. and not Carona Virus.

2. The symptoms of my puppy were of Canine Distemper

The vet gave him an antibiotic and told me to observe him for a few days.

As the puppy was not eating anything i was force feeding him, along with a lot of oral medicines that the vet told me to give.

I took my puppy to the vet on 21st morning and asked them to admit him so we can cure him, but they said there is no cure for distemper I asked the vet to give IV as he was not eating and had diarrhea but they said because the puppy had a very bad nasal congestion / lung infection IV at this moment is not a good idea.

All the did was give him more shots and ask me to look for signs of improvement if any.

I couldn’t take this so i decided to try another vet.
On the 21st morning 3rd vet after seeing the puppy said the symptoms do look like CD but could be a very bad lung infection also.
The vet offered to keep him for two days under care to observe and medicate appropriately.

21st evening i went to see the puppy, he showed no signs of improvement.

22nd evening he showed some signs of improvement in terms of his activeness, as he had the energy to bark and run, but his nasal congestion was not improving and that’s what worried the vet and me.

23rd evening the vet said the puppy ate some food on his own, which was a good sign, but even after treating him for his congestion for two days there was no sign of improvement.

24th morning the vet calls up and says your puppy just died.

WHAT…??? WHY …??? HOW…?

he says he cannot say a 100 % that it was CD, but neither can he say 100 % that it wasn’t. What was it then..? According to him… his congestion got so terrible that he could not breathe….

I don’t know what to make of this, I’m really sad and devastated. I’m not at peace coz i don’t know what happened to my baby.

Im lost…
