Baby Cleo

Today I had to put Cleo to sleep. We got her and her brother Brutus at the local pet rescue. Normal procedure is for them to sterilize inoculate and chip the puppies before sending them home. Brutus came home Friday but Nurse Jackie told us Cleo needs to stay a bit longer due to her weakened immune system. She assured us this was normal and some puppies get a bit sick after an operation. I phone everyday to find out how she was doing and was delighted when they told me yesterday I could go and pick her up. They assured us that she was fine and just need a bit of tender love and care.

This morning Brutus was tail wagging at the door waiting for us when we woke up but there was no sign of Cleo. I found her rolled into a stiff little ball on the pillow and blankets we got them. I thought she was dead. Much to my delight she responded when I picked her up. I decided to take her to my trusted vet just to make sure. Dr Ben’s secretary, Michelle, asked me to phone the rescue to find out exactly what was wrong and what medication she was on. Until this morning I’ve never heard of Distemper. They informed me that she was on antibiotics and she had distemper

Michelle was so nice and understanding. She informed me that Distemper was very contagious and I should get Cleo to the Doctor ASAP. I immediately took her. When we got there Dr Ben confirmed my worst fears. She had to be put to sleep. I am raw….
What can you do? She already had a very bad chest infection as well. Now I fear for little Brutus. He still seems playful and strong. He was so happy yesterday when Cleo came home, they played for hours. It was a sad goodbye to baby Cleo only 10 weeks old.
