Copper’s Case

We got Copper at 11 weeks old. We instantly fell in love with her, and she was a beautiful Golden Retriever pup that we had always wished for. We drove 7 hours to pick her up and 7 hours home. She was the perfect passenger. The first night she threw up, not much, so we chalked it up to a nervous stomach from the ride. The first day home we brought her to the vet, and she was very lethargic. The vet said it was most likely due to her new environment. That night she got sick again, only this time there was blood. We rushed back to the vet and had her hospitalized for severe dehydration. She was in Isolation too because they could not rule out Parvo right off. She stayed for three days in the hospital and came out a whole new puppy. She was great. We were able to get her second set of shots a few days later. We kept her away from dogs, but took short walks around the block. We then needed to travel up to Bend Oregon to pick up our children after a week stay at their grandparents. A few days earlier, Copper started to twitch, we brought her to the vet, and they said it was possibly a sore muscle from walking. The twitch got progressively worse, and on the drive to Oregon she cried the entire 9 hours. We stop first at a vet there and got some muscle relaxers and pain meds. The next day was worse. We rushed back to the vet, only to be told it was a possible toxic issue. We were relieved because we really did not want Distemper After a night in the Hospital, the emergency vet told us what we did not want to hear, he could not rule out distemper Now we are trying to sedate her to take her home and have an MRI. We are faced with losing our baby, and are devasted. If anyone has any suggestions we would love to hear them.

  • Copper’s Drama - by JTK - (Fri, Aug 03 2007)
We brought our little Copper (Golden Retriever) home on July 4th. She was just getting ready to turn 11 weeks. She seemed very sweet, quiet, and a little nervous. She was great on the drive home, and so sweet. No accidents, and no motion sickness. That night she threw up, but seemed to sleep okay. We figured her stomach was nervous from the drive. [more..]
