To quickly access health information from your website's browser, download what calicivirus can do We have 4 cats in our household, the eldest dash is 10 yrs, she had a bloody nose and took her to the vet. She had cancer on her nose so they decided to try cryosurgery (freezing the cancer) to get rid of it. She responded very badly to the surgery and i took her back to the vet 5 times within 12 days of the surgery. They kept giving me antibiotics and anti inflammatory medication as her face was really swollen, but seemed to think that she was ok and it would come right. On the 5th visit I saw a different vet at the same hospital and he was very concerned. Half her face and lips had rotted (why hadnt the other vet picked that up 2 days before?) he said the flesh had been dead for 5-6 days. We had it removed and now she looks dreadful, like a skeleton zombie cat. The vet was unsure as to why this had occured with such a routine procedure. She is currently healing well, just looks a mess. 2 days later i noticed that 2 of my other cats were drooling and not eating and their breath was really bad, i looked in their mouths and they seemed to have some kind of ulcers on the roof and teeth in their mouth. I took them to the vet and he said it looks like calicivirus, he also said that dash probably had the virus and thats why she responded so badly to the cryosurgery. So the cats are now on medication for the ulcers and the vet said they should make a full recovery because they are young (3yrs) healthy cats. I wish it had been picked up that dash had the virus b4 surgery, she mite not look the way she does now if it had of been. Reading some of the stories on here has me a little concerned though, the vet made it sound as if it wasnt too bad and that they would recover, yet some cats have died with the same symptoms as my cats. Wish me luck. August 2008
