Calicivirus

by: Steve on Thu, Aug 23 2007

We had 9 cats including 2 full pedigree siamese. Our Grandson was given 2 kittens for his birthday recently but his Dad refused to have them in the house so he asked if we would have them for him (we’ve usually got a lot of cats). The kittens arrived and settled in well with 2 ‘teenage’ male cats looking after them. After a month or so, some of the older cats started showing flu like symptons and were taken to the local vets.

We were assured that they would be fine and just needed antibiotics which were duly dished out to all the infected cats. About a week later the 2 kittens became sluggish in their movements and stopped eating - within a week both were dead despite myself and my wife feeding them with a syringe every 3hrs! We have now lost both of our Siamese, the female, Saphire, had no contact with any of the infected cats and was fed different food, the male, Fletch, seemed to recover from the flu. Both Siamese were eating and drinking properly, they then went downhill rapidly and died within 2 days.

Out vets don’t seem to know what to do and cannot explain this. We now have 5 cats, 3 have recovered from the flu like symptoms and are eating well, the juries still out on 2. My wife is beside herself - we went to her sons wedding on Saturday and had 3 dead cats on Sunday. What should have been a happy time has been ruined for everyone involved. So far we have lost Bobby, Boris, Fletch and Saphire, Oddie and Baby are still suffering. We can only hope they recover fully. I’m sorry if this story is all doom and gloom and I feel very sorry for anyone who is going through this at the moment. Good luck!
