Can vaccines be fatal

We lost our dog Meeka on Oct 6, we had her for 10 1/2 years. On Sept 28 she received vaccinations including rabies borditela and distemper Within 2 days of receiving the shots she had a spiked fever, diareah, vomiting, she wouldn’t eat, and she could hardly walk, when she did walk she was off balance. These symptims got progressively worse each day. We did bring her back to the vet mid week, they wanted to run a whole bunch of tests, non of which had anything to do with distemper They said it must have been a coincidence that she became sick after the shots, and those could not be the cause. Within one week of recceiving the shots, she could not sit or stand or even drink water. We lost her the next morning. I have heard there is a test that the vet can do on dogs - especially for older dogs to check the level of vaccine in their system before they receive shots. Does anyone know of such a test? Could she have been over vaccinated? I want to make sure this doesn’t happen to other dogs if it can be avoided.
